Bonfire guardian needed!
The Hoe Bonfire has been used by villagers for many years and various people have taken on the responsibility of managing and lighting it, most recently Hugh Spence. Hugh has decided it’s time for him to stand down from the role therefore we are looking for someone else to take this on.
It’s important that the size, shape and composition of the bonfire is monitored regularly, and when lit the burn must be closely controlled and the fire brigade notified for obvious safety reasons. If there is anyone willing to volunteer to manage the bonfire please speak to a parish councillor, ideally before the end of October, or contact the parish clerk on clerk@piddinghoe-pc.org.uk.
Don’t forget there is the area on the south side of the Hoe for compostable garden rubbish.
Also, please note the bonfire is very much a community facility rather than a parish council service. The Hoe however is parish land so councillors are responsible. Recognising the bonfire’s convenience to villagers, we are nevertheless aware that bonfires are polluting as well as posing other risks such as from antisocial behaviour. There is a practicable alternative, namely to take such material to the household waste and recycling site.
